The studio
Hello. We are Second River Games, an independent studio in Cambridge, UK. After years of making games and learning what makes them special, we are building the studio we have always wanted to create. We would love you to be here from the start.
We make simulation and management games: worlds where characters, systems, and stories come together in ways nobody scripted, including us. We think the best simulations feel alive, and that a game can surprise you and still make sense. That is the whole idea of the studio.
01What we believe
For a long time, games have asked us to choose between two pleasures.
Some worlds are deeply authored: beautiful, emotional, handcrafted, and the same every time you return. Others are deeply systemic: alive with surprise, but hard to read when something interesting finally happens.
We think that tradeoff was a restriction of the old tools and technology, rather than a game direction choice.
So our focus is to build both at once: worlds that surprise you, and still make sense when they do.
Underneath everything are the things we have always loved: carefully designed systems, choices with consequences, handcrafted worlds. Then we bring in gen AI where it deepens the experience: helping the game understand what players actually mean, letting characters remember you and react to you, and giving our small team room to spend their time on creativity, design and play.
The trick is the balance. We let AI generate the living, unpredictable part: how a character feels, what they remember, how they respond to you. Underneath that sits a firm set of traditional rules that keeps the world coherent, so every surprise still follows cause and effect. When something strange happens in one of our games, it happened for a reason, and if you are curious you can trace it back.
02Why we're called Second River
Twenty-five centuries ago, Heraclitus taught that you cannot step in the same river twice. The water has moved on. So have you.
We love that thought. The first stretch of a working life is the first river: you learn your craft, you experiment, you push at your edges to find out who you are. This studio is our second act. Same people, changed by the water.
It is also a promise about the games. We build worlds that run on living systems: places that remember you, react to you, and never play the same way twice. The river you step into tomorrow will have moved overnight. To us, that is what games should be like.
As for Heraclitus, we like to think he would have made a good game designer. He understood that change is what makes a world worth stepping into at all.
03 · Our first world
Village of Whispers
Village of Whispers is a living village where a single prophecy can reshape relationships, rituals, politics, and the odds of survival.
The villagers love, argue, remember, and gossip. When you speak, they do not simply obey. They interpret you, spread the word, distort it, and slowly your words become their culture. Belief becomes behaviour, and behaviour decides who leads, who survives, and what the village becomes.
That is all we will say for now. More will come later, soon.
04Who we are
Second River was founded in the UK by two developers who have known each other for nearly two decades. We have spent our careers on opposite ends of the same problem: how to make a game world feel alive. This studio is where that work comes together, and where we build something bigger than either of us could alone.
Bulut Karakaya
Co-founder
Bulut has spent fifteen years shipping award-winning games across mobile, PC, and console: he led programming and technical direction on Monument Valley 3, nominated for the BAFTA for Best British Game, and on Desta: The Memories Between, both at ustwo games, and he was lead programmer on Star Trek: Fleet Command. He has also co-founded independent studios, raised seed funding, and shipped original IP on Steam, so he knows what it costs to build something from nothing. When a wild idea survives contact with Bulut, it becomes a game you can actually hold in your hands.
Duygu Cakmak
Co-founder
Duygu spent a decade helping Total War factions and armies to think and behave. Previously R&D Director at Creative Assembly, she led AI research and technical strategy for the series, with credits on Total War: Warhammer I, II and III and Total War: Three Kingdoms. Her work picked up Technical Impact of the Year at the MCV Women in Games Awards and the Software Engineer Award at the everywoman in Technology Awards. She co-founded the AI and Games Conference, chairs the IGGI industry board, and advises the GDC AI Summit. All of which is a long way of saying she has seen the frontier of AI in games up close, and she has seen the production reality that keeps most of it from ever reaching players. Second River is where she is working to close that gap.
05 · Say hello
If you have read this far, we would love to hear from you: what you play, what you wish existed, what you make of the village.
